HEXAGON DERIVATIVES: AEMC 2XLP ARTWORK

Last year I had the pleasure of providing the album artwork for a 2xLP compilation called “Communal Music Vol.10” from the Netherlands-based AEMC collective, (Ambient and Experimental Music Community), featuring 16 ambient composers and sound artists from around the world producing new pieces created only from a collectively curated set of sounds. Posting this about 6 months after it’s release, in true fashion for this blog.

From the liner notes:

“Beforehand, each composer contributed audio - recorded instruments, field recordings, analog synthesizers, etc - resulting in a collective sample pack. The composers then had to translate this audio material to a musical composition. They weren’t allowed to add anything, so each composition is made with the same audio material.

I used the pieces in the HELSINKI, FINLAND: HEXAGON DERIVATIVES series as the basis for the design not simply because they look very cool when used as graphic elements, but because thematically these pieces reflect the nature of the music project so well. Each piece in the HELSINKI HEXAGON series is a single vision, a film composition, pieced together from the parts of different visions, or a fraction of a vision, in almost the exact same manner as the sound compositions on the album.

The 2xLP gatefold album was put out last November by the Seattle Ambient label REALMOREREAL, an artist-run collective who have been putting out a mix of ambient and Fluxus-style conceptual art recordings as well as running the online station RADIOBRENNPUNKT for the past 3 or 4 years.

I have a few copies of this album that I’ll be giving to the first 4 people that purchase these artist proof prints from the HELSINKI HEXAGON series. Contact me here for details.
